Which book next?

Several book booksellers have been advertising the eminent release of The Bastards and the Knives, the long-awaited prequel of the Gentleman Bastard sequence. Don’t hold your breath. This simply is a common case of retail over-optimism. The book was originally supposed to contain two novellas “The Mad Baron’s Mechanical Attic” and “The Choir of Knives,” filling in the backstory of the gang (a snippet at a 2012 reading in NY here). Scott announced in March 2013 that they were being reworked to create a bridge between The Republic of Thieves and The Thorn of Emberlain. He recently tweeted that “the book does not exist and will not for years.”

On a brighter note, it seems that Scott is making good progress on the next installment of the series. He even ventured a possible release date of Fall 2014 and editors have confirmed that Scott began working on it before the final edits of The Republic of Thieves. We can all look forward to:

THE THORN OF EMBERLAIN, the fourth book in the Gentleman Bastard sequence, picks up about half a year after The Republic of Thieves and finds Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen trying to get back on their feet with a major con. They’re trying to sell the services of a non-existent mercenary company to the besieged city-state of Emberlain, hoping to escape with the hiring fees before the chaos of the Vadran civil war overruns Emberlain. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan…
